The theme of GREEN×EXPO 2027 is “Scenery of the Future for Happiness.” In recent years, many people around the world have become aware of planetary boundaries and have started exploring ways to lead happy lives in the future. At the heart of this exploration lies the concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), which emphasizes utilizing nature to address challenges. By deepening our understanding of nature and plants-the foundation of Earth’s environment-and recognizing ourselves as part of this system, we aim to develop methodologies for living harmoniously into tomorrow. At the approximately 100-hectare venue in Yokohama (Kamiseya), GREEN×EXPO 2027 will depict “optimal solutions for sustainability” where nature, people, and society coexist.

The Kyoto Botanical Garden, founded in 1924, is the oldest public botanical garden in Japan. It has an area of about 24 hectares and contains approximately 12,000 plant species and cultivars. Seasonal flowers welcome visitors at the main gate, and you will enjoy walking in a 200-meter-long camphor tree lane. In spring, about 500 cherry trees,. including 180 cultivars, are in full bloom. Autumn leaves are also spectacular. You will find a large lawn, the cherry blossom grove, a rose garden, and a native plant forest. The large stroll-style conservatory has many tropical plants from around the world. We host many events, such as lectures on plant sciences and observation walks and offer consultations on gardening, making the Kyoto Botanical Garden a place of relaxation as well as a source of learning about plants and their culture through viewing them in cultivation.

The Expo ’90 Foundation was established for the continual commemoration of the International Garden and Greenery Exposition, Osaka, Japan, 1990 (Expo ’90), and to promote the exposition’s philosophy of “Harmonious Coexistence between Nature and Humankind” through various activities for future generations. Our major activities include the International Cosmos Prize, which honors individuals and organizations that have made outstanding research activities and achievements both in Japan and abroad that are in line with its philosophy, as well as subsidy project supporting domestic citizen groups and research teams engaged in flower bed creation and greening activities, and the organization of symposia centered on the theme of harmony with nature.

Ikebana is one of the representative aspects of Japanese traditional culture, and ikebana began with Ikenobo.
In 1462 the name Senkei Ikenobo first appeared in historic records as “master of flower arranging.” Senno Ikenobo, who was active in the late Muromachi period (mid-16th century), established the philosophy of ikebana, completing a compilation of Ikenobo teachings called “Senno Kuden.”
Senno Ikenobo taught, “Not only beautiful flowers but also buds and withered flowers have life, and each has its own beauty. By arranging flowers with reverence, one refines oneself.” Arranging flowers and finding beauty in flowers – these are linked to a heart that values nature and cares for other people. This is the spirit of Ikenobo Ikebana.
