Call for Abstracts

This symposium will highlight current advances and future prospects in vertical farming. Vertical farms—also known as Plant Factories with Artificial Lighting (PFALs) or indoor farms—are high-tech systems for plant production within buildings. In these systems, environmental factors such as light, temperature, humidity, and CO₂ concentration are precisely controlled, enabling the year-round production of high-quality and high-yield crops, independent of sunlight and other external environmental conditions.
Vertical farming represents a next-generation agricultural production method, enabling plant cultivation in diverse environments, including densely urbanized areas, regions with extreme climates (e.g., non-optimal photoperiods, high or low temperatures, arid zones), areas with poor soil conditions, and even extraterrestrial environments such as the Moon or Mars.
In recent years, significant progress has been made in understanding plant physiological responses under artificial and closed environments. Research has explored various aspects of light conditions—including intensity, quality, and photoperiod—as well as environmental stresses such as ultraviolet radiation and chilling temperatures. These findings are contributing to the creation of new value in vertical farming by informing innovative cultivation strategies, enviornmental control and automation technologies, and production systems.
We invite the submission of high-quality scientific presentations focused on vertical farming. This is a multidisciplinary symposium, and we welcome contributions from a broad range of research fields, provided they maintain a clear and direct relevance to vertical farming.

The following topics will be developed during the symposium:

  • Photobiology of plants and optimization of light environments in vertical farms
  • Plant phenotyping and physiologies in vertical farms
  • Pre and post harvest treatments
  • Quality control of food products from vertical farms
  • Sensors, models, small microclimate control and energy saving in vertical farms
  • Autonomous plant control, automation, and robotics in vertical farms
  • Design of economics and business models in vertical farm
  • Space farming
