Call for Abstracts

Agroecology is an approach with high potential to face the most important challenges of food & agricultural systems in the 21st century. It represents a transdisciplinary paradigm shift both at farming and socio-economical level, paving the way for the systemic transition towards truly sustainable farming, resilient equitable & multifunctional rural systems. The horticultural sector can take significant advantage by adapting agroecological strategies, methodologies and tools available, to move towards less input but highly knowledge-intensive farming systems. Diversification, soil health, reduction of inputs & emissions to environment, optimal natural resources management through recycling but also participatory & co-creation approaches, fairness, connectivity and synergy are some of the elements & principles to consider. In this Symposium we seek to examine the agroecological concept as applied in horticultural production systems. Presentations should be based on robust scientific knowledge, both case-specific as well from a systemic point of view, encompassing dimensions of innovation, participation & transdisciplinary networking of multiple actors from agroecological science, practice and movements. The issues to be addressed throughout the Symposium’s sessions are expected to address the main challenges in agriculture, including biodiversity loss, scarcity of natural resources, climate stresses, rural decline and interactions between urban and rural landscapes, through agroecological approaches with a transformational impact.

The following topics will be developed during the symposium:

  • Applied agroecological approaches in horticultural production systems for resilience, sustainability and food security & sovereignty
  • Development of participatory agroecological approaches in horticultural research, education & training, agricultural knowledge, breeding and management of natural resources;
  • Management & use of biodiversity in horticultural production systems to increase sustainability and resilience; Development of horticultural plant genetic resources (PGRs) appropriate for low-input, organic/agroecological farming systems; Agroecological infrastructure to promote diversification and increase ecosystem services in agroecosystems of horticultural crops;
  • Greenhouse gases emissions and energy use in horticultural production systems; Novel approaches to increase carbon sequestration potential and resilience to climatic stresses
  • Assessment of plant utilization and traditional horticultural practices grounded in biocultural diversity.
