Call for Abstracts

The “Veges Breed 2026” symposium, titled “Vegetable Breeding for Sustainable Field and Greenhouse Production with Modern Selection Techniques and Molecular Tools,” is being organized in collaboration with leading global seed and breeding companies. This event aims to address the major challenges facing the vegetable breeding sector, including climate change, reduced reliance on chemicals, sustainable production methods, and urbanization. With vegetables now providing benefits beyond nutrition—such as contributing to environmental sustainability, human well-being, and mitigating lifestyle-related health issues—the symposium will highlight innovative approaches for sustainable vegetable breeding. Key topics will include advancements in plant and product development, breeding techniques, seed production, and strategic approaches to meet market demands. A central focus of the symposium will be on applying cutting-edge technological innovations to achieve challenging breeding goals. This interdisciplinary event encourages vegetable breeders, researchers, and seed producers to discuss how these technologies impact breeding practices and support sustainable goals. Presentations will examine both positive and negative aspects of these innovations, emphasizing the complexities of integrating vegetable commodities into advanced breeding systems. By fostering a collaborative environment, the symposium aims to improve the integrated approach vegetable breeders use when addressing the unique needs of different crops. It will serve as a platform for participants to explore the practical implementation of sustainable breeding strategies, helping companies adapt to evolving demands in vegetable breeding and production for a more sustainable future.

The following topics will be developed during the symposium:

  • Innovations in the use of whole genome information and OMICS technologies in vegetable breeding
  • Development and application of DNA markers, genomic selection, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS)
  • Research on quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in terms of plant breeding for disease and insect-pest resistance.
  • Identification and utilization of resistance and susceptibility genes
  • Strategies for enhancing abiotic stress tolerance in vegetable crops
  • New developments in functional plant breeding for human health
  • Advances in high-throughput phenotyping and their application for plant breeding
  • Exploration of epigenetics, self-incompatibility, male sterility, and parthenocarpy
  • Application of digital phenotyping via AI in vegetable breeding
