“Exploring the Diversity of Horticulture” is the general theme of the IHC. Banana is a key example where there is an urgent need to conserve and explore its diversity. The world knows a banana that is intensively grown in monocultures, that consumes a lot of water, uses huge quantities of pesticides and fertilizer, and is threatened by several diseases that are spreading around the globe, among them the devasting TR4. But banana is good example of very early case of domestication with plural origins of cultivation that date back up to 7000 years ago! During history, several natural hybrids have been selected and anchored in many different cultures with a diverse portfolio of ways of growing, uses and traits.

Food sovereignty goes well beyond ensuring that people have enough quantity of food to meet their physical needs. The access to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods is a basic right. However, climate change and market demand put pressure on agriculture and the environment. This symposium will discuss up-to-date knowledge on the cultural and social aspects of the banana diversity, possibilities to transition to economically viable agro-ecological practices, the importance of soil health in different farming systems, novel analytical methods to analyse varietal diversity, innovative ways to increase diversity via breeding and the importance of exploring the diversity of wild banana populations for prebreeding.

The following topics will be developed during the symposium:

  • Socio-economical and cultural significance of diversity in banana varieties
  • Increasing diversity through breeding (classical and CRISPR based)
  • Diversity in farming systems: towards sustainable climate resilient banana production
  • Novel analytical methods for genetic diversity
