The vegetable greenhouse cluster in Kita-Yamada-cho, Kusatsu City, is located on a plain in southern Shiga Prefecture. This area is part of an alluvial fan that was formed by the flooding of the former Kusatsu River, and the soil is predominantly sandy. The region enjoys one of the milder climates in the prefecture and benefits from its convenient access to major cities like Kyoto and Osaka. Historically, this land was covered with mulberry fields for sericulture during the Meiji era (1868-1912). From the Taisho era (1912-1926), farmers began shipping ‘Yamada Nezumi Daikon,’ a local traditional radish, to Kyoto for pickle processing. Since the 1960s, the area has undergone significant development of greenhouse production. Today, it has become a major vegetable production hub with approximately 150 growers, 58 hectares of farmland, and nearly 2,000 greenhouse structures such as hoop houses. The primary crop is mizuna, along with other produce like green onions, spring radishes, spinach, and melons.
